It was often brought back to Western Europe by crusading knights and gets its name from the Old French "franc encens" (meaning "pure incense"). Archaeological evidence shows that frankincense, along with myrrh, cinnamon, and cardamon, were among the most common ingredients in the balms, ointments, and aromatics used in ancient Egypt for spiritual purposes such as burials and embalming. By 1000 BCE, frankincense was also being used in Greece, Rome, China, and Babylon. Often considered holy and used in religious ceremonies, frankincense is one of the gifts given to Jesus by Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar (the three Magi) in the Gospel of Matthew. Today, frankincense is also commonly used in aromatherapy.
